Kitchen & Bathroom - Cabinets & Design

This company also operates under the name RELIABLE CABINETS MANUFACTURING. This sub-trade IS NOT one of my general contractor's recommends. The cabinets I ordered were supposed to be dado joined & lap joined, glued & screwed, but that was not the quality I received - they gave me stapled - no glue. Other issues included damage done to the inside of each door when the handles were installed, and never repaired. On first look - the cabinets look really nice. However, cabinet sizes and cabinet door sizes are wrong, the pantry doors were very poor quality and badly installed, the overall workmanship was very poor quality. Handles are now coming loose. In the laundry room the cabinet was the wrong door profile & incomplete & the shelving I ordered was never installed. I gave him just over $11,000 for the work completed, but the balance (10%) is still held back due to in-completion and error corrections. I told him I would be glad to pay him the balance AFTER the work is done properly. The normal procedure is that the final payment, usually 10%, is held back until the work is completed properly.

Approximate cost of services:
$14,000.00
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Get everything - every little detail in writing in a contract. Hold back as much money as possible until the job is complete. I looked at this fellows previous work and it looked fantastic. Go with someone who has a written warranty and only go with someone who has an established reputation of excellent quality.

I declined his offer since I did not want to risk paying the remaining 10%, having the work done improperly, and then having to pay someone else to fix his work. I decided to cut my losses.
