Sunik Roofing: Past Warranty, Past Hope, Take a Pass on this Company
I was overseas working when I had to get my roof reshingled in Calgary. I was forced to use my wife to oversee this process, as I was on the other side of the planet. Unfortunately, as an overseas co-owner of the home, I was not informed by Sunik Roofing of the two year warranty period on the home, which requires, apparently, a payment for renewal of the warranty. Four years later, the Sunik Roofing roof work has been found to be leaking water into the living room during this weeks rain in Calgary; after my home management company was informed of the leak by the tenant, I called the company asking them to do an estimate for repair on their own faulty work, the company then said they would sent an estimator for $250 Canadian...when I asked the person on the phone why they were trying to charge for an estimate (when in fact, my home manager had lined up another roofer who was giving an estimate for free, which is standard construction practice), the rep on the line said this was actually a service call, and they would fix the leak plus charge a service call fee for the roofing technician (charge me for the estimate, and the fix). This was just a play on words, and an attempt at charging for an estimate. As I filed a complaint with the BBB on this practice of predatory pricing on an estimate by Sunik Roofing for their own botched work, I noted that the Sunik Roofing good BBB rating was actually on two Sunik Roofing offices to the North of Calgary in rural areas, and in fact the office in Calgary (the office I just called which installed the leaky roof) has never been rated by a consumer before at the BBB until I put a poor rating in yesterday to the Better Business Bureau yesterday. So do not do like I did, and use the BBB alone as a judgement tool with respect to the work of this contractor; check other sources of information, specific to City of Calgary, as you cannot rely on one source of information on contractors for their work. Check several previous direct references from the company within Calgary, especially references that are in the 4 to 8 year range for roofs, in order to determine the long-term quality of Sunik Roofings work...which from my perspective, as I face potentially costly repairs (the other contractor is doing the estimate right now on the leak), could lead you - in reality - to getting something like the below email stating your roof is leaking from your home management people (contactees removed).
- Approximate cost of services:
- $6,500.00
- Company Response
When we give a quote we always include a copy of our labour warrantee with the quote.
When the job is complete we provide a copy of our labour warrantee along with the billing.
We also send out mailers when the labour warrantee is about to expire and offer a chance to extend
the warrantee.
In this case our labour warrantee has expired and the customer chose not to renew it.We understood that the customer had a leak. We offered to come out right away to temporarily fix the
leak to minimize any interior damage [totally optional]. We would charge $250.00 for a temporary repair.
Then do a proper repair if necessary at a later date.
We never charge nor was there ever any intention to charge for an estimate. The customer could have chosen
to skip the temporary repairs and just get the free estimate. If we had just done an temporary repair, there would be obligation or commitment
to go with us for the any other work.We stated that if there were a bigger issue the $250.00 could be put towards the repair.
There is only one Sunik Roofing with one location and one BBB listing.
If You would like to discuss this further I would be happy to speak with you.
