According to their website “custom, hand made and installed cabinets . . .” Unfortunately, I don’t believe this statement to be true. There were unforeseen plumbing issues – we paid to have the pipes moved in order to accommodate the upper cabinets, however because the cabinets were already made the installation of the cabinets still had to be altered in order to get them to work. The cabinets were pulled out from the wall approximately 2” and dropped 2.5”. This gives us 12 ¾” counter to light skirt – a coffee maker will not fit – and shortens the work space on the counter. Numerous attempts have been made by us to have NuKitchen come back to correct the issue (John & Dave stood in our kitchen and said “live with it the way it is but if your not happy let us know”). Of course, we paid them (in full) and believed they would come back to address our issues. The only response we received was through an email stating:
“The best way to raise the cabinets without having to order all new doors (which is very costly) would be to remove all the under mount lighting, upper cabinets, light rail, riser & crown molding, the custom duct work will all have to be removed and started again from scratch, remove the doors, take apart the cabinets & panels, cut down the necessary pieces, reassemble the cabinets, reinstall the riser and crown molding, reinstall panels, reinstall the cabinets 2" higher, reinstall the doors, reinstall the light rail and reinstall the under mount lights. Much of the light rail, crown molding, riser and panels will need to be remade at the shop. The doors will be the same height but now they will cover the riser by 2" and should give the look you want. Our next available time to schedule this in would be late Jan/14. The cost of doing this will be $ 8,750.00 + hst. This is a tremendous amount of work and we have never done this for anyone before in the history of the company although we have been in situations where the backsplash had to be 15 1/2" high like yours. We strongly advise against doing this work, it's a lot of time and money for such a miniscule difference of appearance. Please give this a good amount of thought before making your decision.”
Believe me, a miniscule difference of appearance is not what my complaint is/was . . . it’s the functionality of the kitchen.
Everything with them was always “a lot of work” or “a lot of time”. We have decided not to have NuKitchen back into our home and I will not or would not recommend them for any custom work . . . if you live in a cookie cutter home they’ll do fine - but you have to stay on top of them.
