Replacement of shower/tub faucets

We had a shower leak into the kitchen below; turns out that an internal component in the shower plumbing had seized. Unfortunately, the builder of our home didn't provide access to the plumbing, so our Handyman rep - Khalid Alekozai - not only identified the problem but also created an access panel for us and replaced the shower/tub hardware - looks great, works great. Khalid came when he said he would, the work was done within estimate, and you can tell he takes pride in excellent work. Many thanks!

Kitchen project

Requested a quote for a pass-through/bay window to be cut into the kitchen wall. Quoted $1300 + supplies.

Be warned: the quotes only cover the basic job. Basic pipe reroute behind the wall was extra ($300 extra). If I wanted the garbage removed, extra. If I wanted the trim/area painted to make the job look 'finished', extra.
Was charged roughly $300 in supplies (lumber/drywall/etc). Found new hardware and lumber tucked under the refuse. Why was I charged for things he didn't use?
On the last day he cracked a tile when he was finishing. Didn't recut, just laid it as-is which means I now have a visible crack on my backsplash.

Good correspondence to that point however once an Email with pictures were sent to the company, nothing. Their 'guarentee' isn't worth the paper it's written on.
Also, that appealing quote of $1300 turned into $2300 after taxes and all the Add-ons and I was left with the garbage and a basic, unfinished look to the job.

Bathroom

We purchased a new 3-way shower fixture which required experienced work to install. Two estimates were provided - one for Alex to remove tiles and open up the plumbing and to replace tiles afterwards. The other estimate was by the plumber to install the shower fittings. A confirmation was issued for a Monday where the majority of the work was to be completed. It only required the plumber to return the following day to check out the installation.

On the promised date Alex came on time and removed tile, etc. However, the plumber did not arrive as promised and the office could not locate him but sent another plumber to check out the requirements. He was not confident with the job and so the company eventually were able to contact the original plumber and have him come the following day (Tuesday) around noon. He installed the 3-way shower but could not find a back plate for the shower head so installed the old one. Alex came back that same day to finish up with new tiles, caulking etc. and did an excellent job.

The following day the plumber returned to check out the installation and everything seemed to be fine. However, while I was cleaning up I found the correct back plate for the shower head on the bathroom floor. Also the spout into the bathtub was loose around the tile and it appeared it would come out of the wall (as it turned out that was not the case). However we called Handyman Connection who arranged for the plumber to come back the following day and he installed the back plate and re-caulked the tub spout. The shower installation is now working well.

Replaced Toilet

This review is for the Handyman office serving Toronto West, owned by Fadi, with Duane as the office manager. Our old (30+ years) toilet had sprung a flange leak and we eventually decided it was best to replace, rather than repair. Duane arranged for Dave his plumber to pick-up and deliver the new unit, make the installation and take away the old one. Dave arrived in a timely manner and did a great, first rate-installation job. We are very pleased with the service we received from Duane and Dave.

Bathroom tiling, caulking and clean-up around window and bathtub

Alex came to do a quote and make recommendations and then returned a week later as promised. He started at 9.00am and removed old tiles, got new tiles to replace them and installed marble around the window frame and the new tiles. He did an excellent job, cleaning up the remainder of the tiles and applying caulking around the window frame, bathtub and shower, and spout. An excellent, professional job. We will need some more work doing in the bathroom in the future and will have no hesitation in requesting his services again.

Approximate cost of services:
$750.00

Fan installations

I made the initial inquiry via email and Alexresponded right away. We set up a date and time for him to install our new ceiling fans and he texted me to confirm the time and texted me when he was on his way. We replaced three 10 year old ceiling fans with more high tech ones so the very fair cost reflects the extra time it took to wire and install them. A few weeks after the installation, I emailed Alex with a question about fan light. He responded promptly and walked me through the issue - I wasn't aware the lights were on dimmers.

I am so glad that I used their services. We will certainly be requesting their services again.

Cutting a vent hole through side of house

My mother-in-law needed to replace her range hood in the kitchen. After discovering that the existing hood was not vented properly, I contacted Handyman Connection to core a 6" hole through the exterior kitchen wall. I explained the job, told them that it had to be a 6" hole (to code) and it was going through brick. I was quoted $400 for the service. On the day, the contractor showed up, claimed that he had to charge $500 because the $400 only covered the labour and the additional $100 was for renting the drill and diamond core bit. I have dealt with numerous contractors over the years - some are very good at communication, others not so much. Handyman Connection falls in the latter category. If you decide to hire them, please do not let them increase the price of the service unless they have a legitimate reason to do so.

Approximate cost of services:
$400.00

Company Response

I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, unfortunately a 6" core bit is not a standard drill bit that's why we had to let you know about the additional rental fee before we had you sign a contract or did any work. Appreciate the feed back and will definitely update our procedures to communicate such charges from the office.

fixed broken mainline wiring to 3 plugs

Shout out to Handyman Connection: I needed an electrician to fix plugs that weren't working. Turns out the insurance company's electrician just jury-rigged broken mainline wires to make the plugs work. The electrician sent by Handyman Connection saw what had been done and fixed the problem correctly. It was great to call 1 number and get a good electrician instead of calling 3 or 4 individuals for quotes etc. and not knowing if you're getting a good worker or poor one. This company is worth it and I definitely will use them in the future. Thanks to Dimitri for being on time, problem solved the issue quickly and fixed it perfectly!

electrical work

A definite 10 star rate is well deserved!

2 receptacles had to be changed. I contacted the Handyman Connection. The office staff listened to what needed to be done and arranged for the electrician to contact me. Within 1 business day an electrician called and arrived within 24 hours. It was a small easy job that was done within 90 mins. The hourly rate was more than fair and reasonable. I had used an electrician from another company several months ago, and their rate was $75/hr more.

Payment: Although they did accept credit card payments, he said because the office was closed I should write a cheque, however, that cheque took 3 weeks before it showed up on my bank records. I can only assume with such a large company/several branches it likely takes a while for the office admins/accounting staff to process the payment.

Approximate cost of services:
$234.00
