We had the main floor and upstairs of our 1930's Toronto home de-squeeked. The noise was becoming unbearable, and so we hired Silent Floor Solutions. They were very professional, timely and courteous. The project took 5 whole days to complete. They offered to come back a few weeks later if I found any spots to be a bit noisy still and they did return free of charge. They don't guarantee 100% squeak free, and they can't. Unless you truly pull up all the flooring and fix what's below it, they do the best they can. They do guarantee around 75-90% better than it was. Our home was one of the noisiest they said (my cat made it squeak when he walked!), and I'm sure they got rid of probably 85% of the noise. The only negative we encountered was that our floors were original to the house, so when they marked the flooring with tape (that's how they figure out where to drill) and pulled it up - the finish came up with it and left us with many stripes on the ground. The floors never looked great to begin with, but we will need to fix that a bit. I would suggest perhaps that they try using a chalk pen or something instead so it doesn't happen to anyone else. They did use the 'best kind' of tape for this, but unfortunately my old floors won. I would recommend this to anyone who is unable to sneak into bed without waking their partner or to anyone who has a basement apartment below them! We're quite happy with the outcome and are hopeful the effects will last a while.

Had Knob and Tube removed from 2 floors of 1930's home. The team is very knowledgeable and worked well on a timeline. My insurance company gave me 30 days to get it removed and KNT had it done in less than a week. It has now been a month since it was completed and everything is working fine. I chose them over the competitors because of their attention to detail and price breakdowns. Some companies just walked in and told me a price. KNT went room by room, took diagrams and tested every outlet and switch. That's what won me over. The weren't the cheapest, but I felt good with my decision. I also paid extra to have them fill in the holes in the drywall. Well worth the hassle of doing it yourself as there were a large amount of holes. I did have them come back to fill 2 holes missed, and also to paint over a few markings they left on a wall in a room they did no work in. It did take a few emails, but they did come and took care it. My suggestion to those looking to book these guys, is to get a quote for everything being updated PLUS all the extras you want done. i.e. Adding bathroom exhaust fans, exterior outlets, more switches and outlets etc. They told me we'd discuss it later - but then before you know it - the price is a lot more than you anticipated. The cost for installing the bathroom fan price for example was not easily known from looking at the price breakdown sheet. I'd also suggest to fully review their quote - as mine included a few thousand dollars of extras not needed. I believe it was a simple oversight on their behalf and that it was not done on purpose - but good to check obviously. Only other thing is cleanliness. Many floors were covered with plastic, but then some days they were not. Everything was covered in dust (obviously from drywall work being messy), but I suppose I just assumed they would clean everything after. It was my first big contractor job in the house so perhaps I was naive in thinking it would be spotless. Overall, I would recommend this company to my friends.

Company Response

Thank you for the review.
In the future we will let clients know that houses with flat roofs require more holes because each joist must be drilled to fish the wire from one area of the house to the next.

Our estimates always meet minimum ESA 2012 code with the project mandate of only replacing the knob and tube. We always try to provide realistic estimates along with our price list and we clearly state in our presentation and documents we will credit any work quoted and not required and additional work will be charged as per price list. We feel this transparent approach is most fair because we can not see through the walls and can not determine the quality of previous electrical work.

The price list provided includes wish list items- such as smoke detectors, Data wiring, pot lights, kitchen/bathroom exhausts and ceiling fans. These are not considered part of the originally quoted project mandate "replace the knob and tube wiring"
Any items quoted and not required are a result of this transparency we know it is easier to explain a price reduction vs increase.

I understand that the dust gets everywhere and we will try to help our clients understand.
