In 2017 we needed to replace an existing vinyl deck with something a bit better looking and more confidence-inspiring. Anton gave the cheapest estimate, but more importantly he was knowledgeable, easy going and amenable to our preferences. Plus he was able to give a rough start date, which is always a bit tricky with deck builders. The demo work to remove the old deck was tidy and done with a minimum of disruption. And the construction of the new deck was excellent and of good quality from the concrete footings to where the wood was joined to the outside of the house. It looks great, is reassuringly solidly built, and Anton gave fairly detailed advice on care and cleaning. Altogether, a really excellent job.

Clarke Basement Systems installed a sump pump and weeping tile in my basement, with the floor levelled with self-levelling cement, and waterproofing on the walls. Given their reviews, they were an obvious choice to get a quote, and despite them being significantly more expensive than competitors, it seemed worth the additional cost. The work on the whole is pretty good, and the installation team were helpful. It has to be said, though, that out of 6 days they came to the house, they were late (as in, an hour or more) five of them. More importantly, the sales process and the installation process are completely separate. The sales process is a hard sell of rhetorical/ dumb questions such as "how much of your basement do you want dry?"; "how much of the time do you want it dry" and so on; followed by a promise that yes, it will absolutely match up to your expectations. The installation team then come along, and have to explain that what was promised is actually not doable within the specific basement. So the existing concrete floor was too uneven for them to be able to deliver a flat floor, for example; and when the sales guy said the waterproof sheeting would run up to the window frames, he hadn’t taken into account the quality of the bricks around the window frames. Throughout, they were very helpful and pleasant, and tried their best to deliver what was sold to me. And I completely understood the issues – but it doesn’t negate the fact that what we were sold is not what they could deliver. In short, it’s quality work, and they’re good to work with. I’m not certain I’d go with them again, though: for the price, you should be checking every single detail with the sales guy; and don’t rule out other well-reviewed companies.

A friend recommended GTALawn as they'd laid her turf, so I also got a quote from them. My lawn although smaller than my friends, cost exactly the same as hers, which was the first warning sign. The guys came to lay the sod, but didn't bother to level the soil first. They also gave sod-all help or advice on what to do about raccoons peeling back the turf rolls. The grass itself is of reasonable quality, but after 1 winter it's now as uneven as Rob Ford's track record in office; with more holes than a Swiss cheese. I really can't recommend this crew.
