We contacted AGL Grass in the early fall about leveling our yard, laying turf and for help with locating a contractor for laying paving stones. We were told with 1/2 down they'd order the grass and we'd have it two weeks later. After numerous emails with no answer we thought we were going to chalk it up to lessons learned and that we'd lost our deposit. Then mid December we received a call that they'd be there the next morning. They showed up and did what we thought was an okay job, we were concerned about the grading and in fact pointed it out to them that the grading wasn't low enough for pavers to go next to our existing patio. We were told it was okay and that the other landscaping contractor would have no problems with it. The day they finished it started to snow and so we really didn't get to see much of it until the spring
Over the winter we were in contact with the other contractor (which we had to track down ourselves, since AGL only provided his name). Turns out he was only slightly aware of our plans. We dealt with him over the winter, picking out pavers etc. And we have to say he was a pleasure to deal with (see review of Gardens of Distinction). When the spring came and the snow was gone, they showed up and were disappointed, as we were, that the AGL job was a complete wreck. The grass was sloping towards the house, the grading was not low enough and the 2" of screening that AGL was supposed to lay was only about 1/2" at best and they had used galvanized roofing nails to hold the grass to our tree (this would have eventually killed our tree).
I contacted AGL and was floored by their response. Firstly they were rude and arrogant, the guy told me that he couldn't believe another contractor would question their work. I told him the cost the other contractor quoted to fix the problem and his response was "If I were you I'd get another quote". He told me 1/2 the problem was probably because of the salesman and that’s why he no longer worked with the company. He told me he would get back to me 'later'. Now to me later means the same day, since I did call him at 10 am. Later was 36 hrs later, after enough time had passed that I told the second contractor to go ahead and 'make it right' since I only had a week in town to complete the project and I wasn't getting a warm and fuzzy feeling from AGL that they'd even cared about their customers. In the 36 hrs I waited for a response I sent an email to AGL with pictures asking for 1/2 our money back since they only did 1/2 the job. When they did call back he yelled at me for sending him the pictures and that he didn't think the screening was what 'his guys' had left. I told him that there was no way anyone could have come into the yard over the winter and dumped a yard full of screening. So they said they wanted to come look at it. I told him he could come but I already had the other contractor fixing his work.
So AGL arrives and the first thing he does is to air dirty laundry about the other contractor, don't forget, this is the contractor they recommended. I was floored that any business would speak about another business in front of a client like that. If there is bad blood, then it should be dealt with privately, it was in very poor taste and very poor business practices. The next thing he said to me was that since the other contractor had taken up the grass our warranty was now void and he walked away.
They are rude, arrogant, practice poor business procedures, and perform shoddy work. Stay away from these guys, have your landscaper buy the turf and lay it himself you will be money ahead not dealing with this company.
