furnace repair

These guys fixed my furnace a while back. At the time it was pretty cold and I phoned a few providers, but they were the only one who were available right away. So I really like them because they were responsive and they were certified. The guy who came was very professional and I appreciated his explanation of the problem and how he would fix it. He was in and out in a day, fished in a very timely fashion. I would definitely recommend them to a friend or anyone who need some furnace work done.

We are happy that our technician was able to solve your furnace problem – the correct diagnosis, parts stocked in our warehouse locally, were key in getting you warm again. New Furnace/Hot Water Heater

A friend recommended these guys to me when my water heater and furnace both needed to be replaced. They were able to install both in just one day. It was perfect. They packed up everything before they left, didn’t leave a mess. Prices were competitive. Would very highly recommend them.

Thank- you for the positive review. As most of our business is by referral, your friends’ recommendation is of great value to us. Building that trust by being efficient, leaving spaces clean, and doing it for a fair price are all great reasons to make R&B your favorite heating company. Thanks for passing that along through the Homestars review page. Thank- you again, Michelle Blaksic

Furnace/Hot Water Tank Install and Maintenance

About 5 years ago R & B Plumbing installed a hot water tank and new furnace for me. The installation job seemed well done, they were professional and the price wasn’t bad, so I’ve kept them coming back to service the heating systems for me every year. They’ve been satisfactory, otherwise I wouldn’t still use them. Rob is great, and the service guy who always comes explains everything he does as well as answers any questions I have very sensibly. Would recommend.

Sink Installation

Jesse, from R&B plumbing was very friendly, professional and above all, tidy. He wasted no time getting his job done, which is very much appreciated when one is being charged for time. It is very common for tradesmen to chat with clients and then charge for that time, as well as leave behind their mess. Jesse was personable without being overly so, laid out a cloth on which to work and used his shop vac diligently while completing the task in a timely fashion. His overall manner while working in my home is what makes me highly recommend him as well as R&B Plumbing for any future work I may need, or to any on else needing plumbing services.

Thank-you for the kind review. We are always happy to hear about the positive experience that our team provides. It is a balance to keep the customer informed, while not taking too much time with detailed explanations. And while we like a friendly technician, nobody wants to pay for frivolous chat. Nice to hear that we hit the mark. Thank- you again, Michelle Blaksic

Gas Fireplace set up & plumbing repair

I had a new gas fireplace installed by another company but for some reason, before they left, they didn’t set it up to work with the remote. I decided to get R&B to come out. Rob arrived and programmed the remote to the fireplace box so you could use the programmable thermostat feature and remote control to turn it on and off. He took care to adjust the fuel pressure so that the fireplace was working within the manufacturers specifications.
While he was there, I mentioned my upstairs toilet that was running but it only happened on occasion. Luckily it was running right then and he was able to take a look. I was really happy I had asked while he was there since it saved me the price of a second service call - plus I was able to avoid the scenario where I would call them out just for the toilet only to have the problem not happen and then what would he investigate?
He pulled off the toilet tank lid and discovered that the problem was a simple one. The chain that lifted the plug in the bottom of the tank was simply too long. The excess chain was getting caught under the seal at the bottom of the tank and causing the toilet to run. A few less links in the chain and it hasn’t happened since.
All in all, I was very satisfied with the professionalism and value for service. Even though I hope not to need them soon, I will definitely have them back again.

$140.00

Thank-you for the positive review. When the efficiency of a fireplace is so much lower than a furnace, we know how important it is to have thermostat managing the use of it. If a fireplace is your main source of heat in a room (or even if it isn’t), a programmable thermostat can really save you money by having it turn on, only when you need it, and only when you are home. In your case, it was also adjusting the flame levels of your new fireplace to burn efficiently and evenly that will improve the life of the unit, and give you the look that was intended when you chose that fireplace model. We know that it’s the smaller details that make the difference, whether it is programming the remote or stopping a running toilet, that make our customers life easier. Rob has a passion for providing his customers with products that are of good quality and work well. Thank – you again ,Rob Blaksic

Furnace inspection

Pros: easy to schedule an appointment, on time for appointment; Cons: lack of accountability for errors/mistakes, unprofessional reply to customers' complaint.

Here's the gist: Rob forgot to close the pipe when he shut down our boiler which left the water dripping until late night. If we had not gone down to the basement, we wouldn't have found out. The floor was soaked and took an hour to clean the mess. We had to throw away a couple of area rugs because they were disgusting! If we had not figured out what was missed, it could've caused a lot more issues not to mention the potential for mold if the area had not been dried properly. His response when we alerted him to this issue (copied and pasted directly from his email):
"Hi,
Sorry, it was an honest mistake.
As you seem more concerned about a little water on the floor more than the safety risk your old boiler could have caused, please disregard any invoice sent to you.
The “costs” you could have incurred from your boiler could have been more than monetary."

Our take: Thank you, Rob, for pointing out we need a new boiler which, by the way, other professionals would have been able to do as well. The point is he made an error but was too proud to own up without sounding condescending. We went with Rob because he was recommended, but I guess we'll be looking elsewhere. Oh and he was going to send us an invoice...really????

Furnace Inspection - Continued (November 7 2014)

Dear Reader, this is our response to the company's reply below since we cannot add/respond on a different link:

I wrote my review above so that OTHERS will understand what happened and prevent any issues through their choice of a company. Even if the review is not as stellar as what the company expects, it is a clear documentation of that facts AS EXPERIENCED by the customer. This website, after all, is an avenue for customers to review companies!

And unfortunately, the owner still does not understand the review...his rants just make him look even more unprofessional! We didn't get that furnace fixed to the state he described. So, I don't know why he is going on about the shabby way it was made. We bought the house with that furnace like that. We trusted Rob with our furnace and he caused a flood.

I understand the carbon monoxide part and there is no need to copy and paste off "google" to make a point. His words imply that we are irresponsible people by "only caring about money" and not the health hazards of CO. The way he minimized the inconvenience he caused by responding the way he did vexes but does not surprise me, given that "[he is] in the top 10% of [his] field" and we, as customers, know nothing. And, by his response, it also seemed like no other professional (but him) would have been able to detect carbon monoxide levels through the use of a standard detection hand tool (which is what he used). I highly doubt that!

THE QUESTION IS: Did he or did he not cause a flood in our basement because HE FORGOT something??? That's the question and that was our complaint!!! The shabby furnace and flood are two unrelated things. Any intelligent human being will see that! There was no flood until he fiddled around with our furnace.
- As for his offer to clean up the flood, we discovered it on a Friday night at 9pm (so yes, it had been leaking for 12 hours!). It would be unreasonable to expect us to leave it until we called his guys. It was a great inconvenience and a potential mold issue. What about the health concerns mold presents to a family???

By the way, I saw that Rob (the owner) had been looking us up on social media! If he had to seek out personal and professional information about customers after a bad review, it is frankly very scary, "stalky," and shows a complete lack of professionalism. I will keep the email notification as evidence for any future needs.

Company Response

As we have already done directly to this customer and in response to all the places he has reposted this review: We acknowledge that the screw was left out causing the boiler to drip causing a collection of water on the floor. We apologized several times for any inconvenience this may have caused. We regret that our company was not advised of the mess until several days later thus preventing us from dispatching one of our technicians who are on call 24hours, to attend to the water on the floor. We are relieved that the customer reported that most of the water was soaked up by the area rug and cleaned up in an hour. We have used this experience as an example for our staff and technician training this month. This type of incident and the way the customer feels about our company are not desirable and training is a way to ensure they will not be repeated in the future.

Thank-you, Barb for that positive feedback. Our top notch dispatch protocol means that your calls are answered and more importantly, scheduled efficiently. Problems with a garbage disposal often means the loss of use of the ever important kitchen sink! While not technically an emergency we are happy to have provided the 1-hour response time.

Valve replacement, pipe relocation, misc installations

R&B were instrumental in getting a difficult repair completed on short notice, within a very tight time frame. Alex was able to squeeze us in while showing concern and respect for their previously scheduled customers. The plumbers on site helped my mother-in-law with some troublesome but minor repairs that saved us money and made a world of difference for her. Very nice people to work with -- friendly, helpful, professional and very detail-oriented. I recommended them with high praise.

Company Response

Thank-you for the glowing review. We were happy to be able to help this customer and schedule our technician at a time when the building water was shut down anyway, thus saving her a large amount of money.

In apartment buildings if your suite shut-off valves don'tt work, the water to the whole building or riser needs be drained for in-suite repairs to be done. What we did for this customer was replace her shut-off valves to allow her to isolate her own suite for things like replacing fixtures and appliances. Her existing shut-offs or "stops" as we call them were, in one case not turning, and in the other and not sealing. She wanted to install her new washer but without them, she could not.

It is common in older buildings for these seldom used valves to become stuck open or non-operational. Replacing the valves and the hoses at the same time is good preventative maintenance.

Clogged sinks are always inconvenient. Having a plumber come to clear it is sometimes necessary but there are some things you can do as a homeowner to prevent this type of clog.
1. Be careful what you put down there. I know this sounds obvious, but things like coffee grounds are surprisingly a common problem.
2. Use a sink strainer all the time.
3. Use a lot of hot water when rinsing things down the sink. Use more than you think you will need. Some drains have a long way to go before they reach the main line and just like a river they drop debris along the way as the water out paces the debris in it.

Of course there are times when build-up is unavoidable. If you visit the FAQ section of our new website there are some tips on what not to do when your drain is plugged. http://randbplumbing.ca/faq-drainage/
