Renovated Kitchen, Bath, and Main Floor

Mike and Lisa were amazing! They came in a got us exactly what we wanted. We got a load bearing removed opening up the space, changed all our floors to hardwood and tiles that looked like hardwood to match, and added a bunch of new pot lights. Everything is so bright and perfect. Mike was always on time and very professional. I would highly recommend then and would use them again in the future.

Bathroom Reno (x3)

After reviewing a few design/contracting firms for our three-bathroom renovation project we decided to use Metropolitan Kitchen and Bath because of Lisa and Mike’s attention to detail during the quoting/design phase of the project that helped us gain a level of confidence and trust in their approach and quality of work. The three washrooms were starting to show their age and the main driver for the project was that we wanted to completely renovate the main bath to accommodate our three kids as they get older while offering some privacy during use. Lisa and Mike presented design options for the main bathroom that allowed us to achieve our goal of having all three use the bathroom at the same time (i.e. one in the shower/toilet and two brushing teeth) while still offering all the privacy and storage space required, not to mention a fresh modern look! Lisa’s recommendation of materials, colours, and finishes turned out to be fantastic. The pocket door installation between the shower/toilet area and common area of the washroom was brilliant and functional, we love the light through the translucent panel in the door when closed, the space still looks bright and airy regardless of whether the door is open or closed. My wife and I are jealous of the shower the kids get to use daily, truly spa quality! The project was completed on time and on budget which is what we expected from Mike and Lisa because of the significant time and effort invested in the planning phase of the project (not to mention we were never without at least one functioning toilet and shower!). Mike and his crew always left the workspace clean and did not leave any garbage, tools, nails, etc around for my kids to get into while the project was ongoing. Like all renovation projects that we have been through there are always unexpected things that come up. When they opened up the ceiling during the main bath renovation they found a small roof leak over an adjoining bedroom that was probably there for a long time. Instead of ignoring the issue, Mike was able to get a roofer to the site the same day to complete the repair at minimal cost to us. We were grateful because didn't have to go through the trouble of finding someone to get it fixed, and if Mike never pointed it out we would never have known there was a roof leak until costly major repairs would be needed at some point in the future. We are thrilled with the quality of work on all three baths, the functionality of the space in the main bath, and the overall ease with which the project was completed.

Front entrance & bathroom

I hired this company to renovate my front entrance & 2 piece bathroom. It was a devastating experience. Where to begin? Even though the floor was levelled before the installation, 5 tiles cracked with the huge crack going in a 5 foot line straight from the front door and into the kitchen. I paid $3,000.00 to frame the pocket door including the drywall and trim. $300.00 for the pocket door and doorstop. The pocket door was a monumental disaster. The finished corner of the drywall was completely crooked. The door was paneled and completely off centre, approximately 5 inches on one side and 2 inches on the other. When the door fell off it's glides (a reoccurring problem), Michael promised to come & fix it with-in two weeks!! He never came. He never answered or returned my many calls. The sconce over the sink was off centre by six inches. The plumbing under the sink was not centred so they cranked the plumbing at an angle to fit. It was a wall mounted sink with two pedestal legs on the front corners. Everytime I used the bathroom or walked in the front door, I was devastated. When they demo'd the bathroom they punched a hole through the wall into my family room. When I complained, Michael patched it up and said the room wasn't their problem. I also had wainscotting put into the bathroom, (same gentleman who installed the door). It was just as devastating, again completely off centre. It was a devastating experience, if there were any details that needed fixing they tacked on significant extra charges. In the end I was scared to complain as I was scared they wouldn't come back to complete the job. Nothing was done well, not even the light switches. This 20,000 figure includes all the tiles, bathroom fixtures, light fixture's, wallpaper and hardware that I purchased independently. My house has two other pocket door's that have never fallen off their glides as they are snug in the casings. Top dollar for a terrible job. It dragged on and on and was the crappiest workmanship I have ever seen. Spare yourself & keep looking, Michael has no integrity.

Company Response

We have a long standing track record of doing great work. Read the other reviews and look at our testimonial video on the front page at metkb.com. These clients are proud to tell the world about who we are and how we work.

Sometimes though, we come across a customer who is is willing to blatantly lie to try and get things done for free. We simply cannot sit back and allow someone to outright lie about who we are and the service we provide.

Here are some facts that the reviewer conveniently left out:

This project was completed 7 years ago! It was beautiful and done right.

She claims that the project was $30,000. Not true. Our bill to her was $14,714.98 plus tax. She paid the entire bill, including the final cheque of 50% of the total which was paid well after everything was complete.

She claims that the pocket door cost $5,000. Not true at all. The entire cost of the pocket door, framing, drywall and all the trim work (wainscotting, door trim, baseboards, etc.) for inside and outside the bathroom was $3,150.

She is making claims that are simply outright lies. The tiles were installed properly and to this day, we have never received one call or email from her about any problems. The switches were installed correctly. The plumbing was done correctly. The pedestal was installed correctly. The bathroom looked beautiful.

The wall sconce was installed centre of the wall, which is where its been since the house was built. In fact, the quote was clear: it said 'install new wall fixture in existing location'. We didn't even move the location. The wainscotting was installed by a professional trim carpenter and it looked terrific.

If even one of these claims were even close to accurate, what rational person would pay the entire bill well after we were finished the project? And if the work was so 'devastating', why only bring it up now over 7 years after we finished?

Here's some insight that was left out of her review:

A year after the installation, she called about the pocket door not working. She claimed that we did not go to her house (again, this is a lie). We went to see the door. The door was physically damaged and it was torn off the rails. She told us that her son yanked it off the rails but that 'it shouldn't be able to do that'. Well, if you lift and pull the door side to side instead of simply opening and closing it, it will indeed come out of the rails, which is exactly what happened to that door. The rail was clearly damaged. The rail is designed to slide the door side to side, not to be used as a toy. We offered to install a new one it but it would be at her cost. She did not want to pay for it and demanded that we pay for it or that she would write a negative review about us. If we installed something incorrectly we would gladly remedy any issues. Its only a pocket door for goodness sake.

We won't be threatened by anyone who just wants things for free. The statements in this person's review are pure fiction.

Kitchen & bathroom renovation

If you are looking for design advice, this is the firm for you. Lisa has an amazing eye and can help solve the dilemma of matching colours and components. She will also help maximize your space - important for small kitchens especially. The construction crew are meticulous and very good about cleaning up at the end of the day.
Be sure to discuss the plan and timelines, and understand them carefully. In particular, discuss the time between demolition and installation. Cabinets are custom and not off the shelf.
Strongly recommend if you are looking for a unique look.

Kitchen Renovation

Lisa and Mike from Metropolitian Kitchen & Bath made our kitchen renovation as painless as possible and was a first class experience all around. Lisa's expertise in design, left us without question, the most beautiful kitchen upgrade we could have ever expected. She knows her product inside out, what's current and where design is generally headed in the next few years. We have no worry of this reno standing the test of time. Mike and his installation team put us on auto pilot. I've seen people make bigger messes while cooking dinner. In all honestly, these guys were fast friendly and surgically accurate, allowing us to enjoy the process and most of all our beautiful new kitchen.

Thank you Lisa, Mike and Team!

Kitchen and general condo renovation

From the initial consult to the final reveal, both Mike and Lisa made an excellent team providing high end design, material selection and high quality construction for my condo redesign. The Metropolitan team are friendly, honest and possess a professional work ethic and kept communication open on a daily basis from start to finish. They worked very hard putting in extra time over the holidays to make sure my project was completed on time and to my satisfaction! I am recommending Metropolitan Kitchen and Bath to friends and colleagues. Those that have seen my new kitchen and renovated condo are so impressed (and jealous). My kitchen looks like it should be in a magazine, yet it is functional to my lifestyle and I feel at home more than ever. Extremely impressed.

Condo Kitchen Reno

I approached Metropolitan kitchen and bath regarding my kitchen reno because they are a provider of Caesar Stone and I really wanted a particular black quartz counter that had a crocodile inlay pattern to it. I had already gone to IKEA for the new cupboards so I brought Lisa my kitchen plan that I already had developed. They were very accommodating to allow the work to be split between themselves and the PEG company that does the contracting work for IKEA. Comparing quotes for the electrical, plumbing and appliance hookup, I decided to have metropolitan do all the kitchen work. I felt like I got a friendlier more personal experience working with Metropolitan than the IKEA contractors. Metropolitan even installed my IKEA cupboards as well.
Lisa was a great help in making some of the style choices such as floor tile, paint colour, etc. I felt confident that the options we were going with would work well together.
Mike was great at laying out different options during the construction that I hadn't considered and keeping all the work costs transparent. I was never pressured to make any changes I wasn't comfortable with and I always had all the information and alternatives presented to me for any decision I did need to make. Every worker from the flooring, painting, plumbing or electrical all showed up when they said they would and the work was done when it was expected to be. My only regret was going to IKEA for the cupboards in the first place. Although custom cabinet work costs a bit more, the IKEA set system will never fit exactly as you would like.

The Met team are all great people that I will definitely trust to do more work for me in the future.

Summary of work done by Metropolitan:
- Matrial and Install kitchen floor tiles
- New electrical panel, lines and pot lights
- Install appliances (dishwasher, stove, cooktop)
- Install IKEA cupboards
- material and install of Caesar Stone counter top and sink
- Painting prep and trim

Kitchen and dining room

Mike and Lisa were recommended to us by some friends who used them a couple of years ago. Since we haven't done a renovation in over 25 years, we didn't know much going into this; however, both Mike and Lisa were very patient and kind in answering all of our questions, no matter how small. The whole experience was a real pleasure and has us thinking about doing a bathroom next. We love our new kitchen and enjoy using the dining room again!!

We are very pleased with this company and look forward to working with them again.

Bathroom Renovation and Upgrade

Chose Metro Kitchen+Bath after reviewing 3 alternatives, web reviews and their proximity to our property. This will be the fifth time we have undertaken similar work (in fact including full home build), and contracted this shortly after a highly successful kitchen upgrade by a different contractor.
This was the worst decision we have ever made in choosing a project manager/contractor (and their were in hindsight red alerts we should have heeded, like them not visiting the home - under 10 minutes from their office - until post-contract). We could write a book, but the following is a summary:
1) Timelines: promised it would take 3 months to complete. More than five months later, not finished and we took over final completions. Some reasons why include their pre-occupation with their own projects (vacations, re-doing their own showroom, etc!)
2) Respect for property: We were assured (and its in their contract) that they would seal all necessary areas and respect the property. We have a library of pictures should anyone be interested of the state of the ENTIRE condo, drawers, closets, clothes, carpets, furnishings covered in layers of dust. Building materials laid out on our bedding. The list goes on. After professional cleaning, and 4 months later, some parts of property still covered. We have spent thousands on cleaning etc to get back to initial state. (BTW, our kitchen reno had walls moved etc, and with spotless during and after construction). To add insult to injury, when we insisted we met at the condo to review progress, and it was as dirty as outlined, Lisa had the temerity to arrive wearing a dust mask and speaking to us through it!)
3) Truthfulness: We were told we would get detailed updates on documents, progress etc, and Michael (Lisa's husband or brother??) was introduced as prime site manager. He never visited on one occasion or communicated. Lisa also stated they have their own staff and their own cabinet facility during initial consultations. Neither is true and we had all sorts of strangers walking through doing various jobs
4) Attitude: Lisa's style is 'my way', and hides behind small print wherever possible. She has a limited range of options to choose from, and our experience is she milks changes ($600 for a pop up plug in sink anyone?) where she can. Very difficult to deal with, and hides behind a couple of youngsters she has hired.
5) Workmanship: The reason it is not a 1-star review is that the actual quality of basic workmanship on cabinetry and showers etc is excellent - excepting the grotesque mess everywhere which would, we are sure contravene Health and Safety regulations if we had called in the Ministry.

We can provide further information and pictures if anyone was ever interested. (BTW we entrusted the property to them, and were out of country so were not able to catch some of this early enough).
Bottom line: maybe they can do small tasks, maybe if they are supervised hourly, maybe if you have a lawyer and your own project manager scrutinizing them, they may be OK. But failing that level of oversight, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!

Company Response

This post doesn't deserve a response, but if we do not respond, we risk that someone might actually believe it! Sometimes you find people who are just never happy no matter how hard you try! We will respond to the points in brief:

Timelines: We do not promise timelines. Any experienced contractor understands that promising a timeline is a gamble when you consider all the external factors that may come into play (ie., no service elevator use during a particular week, items backordered, changes in scope during a project, etc...). We do, however, estimate timelines to the best of our abilities, and keep the client informed of progress. It is in all our best interest to move through every project quickly. When we start, we move through to completion.

Dust: We sealed plastic between all openings, but inevitably some got dust through the plastic barriers. It happens. We apologized, and hired a cleaning staff to clean the condo. This contract had a clause that clearly stated: "Client responsible to cover and protect all furniture and other property and personal belongings from dust and dirt". Despite that, we still hired a cleaning company to clean the unit.

Completion: We completed the project and the client paid the bill. The finished project is beautiful. And done right.

Staff: We were honest and truthful and fulfilled our end of the agreement. To state that Michael never visited the condo is simply not true. Michael was there on many occasions, and also worked on site. The client was out of country for the vast majority of the project. Lisa was responsible for communicating with the client and did so from start to finish. The client was constantly kept up to date with the progress of the project. Like every other contractor, we have a mix of full time staff and sub trades that contribute to the finished product. Specialty trades (that we've known for years, or sometimes decades) are hired on a project by project basis. Our roster of staff and trades are excellent.

Attitude: There is no small print in our contracts. The contracts are plain spoken and simple. If its in the contract, we do it, and the client pays. Pretty simple. Personal attacks against our team, and especially Lisa, are completely unwarranted. Lisa and Michael are very well known in the community and in the industry. Their accomplishments, personality, and character speak for themselves.

Clients can buy their own fixtures, appliances and accessories for us to install, or they can buy from us. Simple. We sell a wide range of fixtures, appliances and accessories from manufactures that we know and trust. Clients have the choice to do either - bring their own or buy from us, whatever suits the client.

No project is ever without roadblocks; however, we pride ourselves in identifying these as soon as possible, and doing everything that is reasonably possible to remediate the issue. We stand by our process and our work, no matter what issues may arise. The finished product is exceptional. And done right.
