Install hardwood throughout main floor and carpet on stairs

When another installer did a bad job, Downtown Flooring saved the day! They took up the poorly laid hardwood, reinstalled it and finished the rest of the main floor expertly, efficiently and quickly. The installers were professional, knowledgable, and willing to accept suggestions and answer questions. Similarly, the carpet layer was most pleasant and proficient at his work. The outcome is beautiful and a great save from what might have been a disaster.

All of the staff were helpful, polite and knowledgable about their business. Thanks especially to Jack Deline who coordinated the project for me. I am happy to recommend them to anyone who wants thoroughly professional work and service.

Downtown Flooring provided amazing service and product at a great price. Normally, I don't right these sort of things but out of all the contractors/suppliers I used on a recent reno, Steve and the guys at Downtown Flooring were the best to work with - great services, professional and delivered exactly what they promised! Installation of a new Cork Floor

We highly recommend this company for your new floor. We visited the store and the staff were very friendly, polite and knew their stuff. Jack, who came to the house to give us a quote was great. He was able to advise us on several points in our project that actually saved us money. Wayne and Gerald showed up to do the install promptly on the planned date and time and were very friendly, polite and well groomed. I find this last point important because if the workers are sloppy I find the job generally is as well. They were fast and very accommodating in anything we asked them to do. They finished off the floor with white quarter round and did miter cuts around the corners of various walls and nooks that really impressed us. The job is beautiful and we can hardly wait to show it off to friends. If you want to have a great job done by a super flooring company go see Downtown Flooring.

Hardwood Floors Installed

In November 2011 I had hardwood floors installed in my home. Although it has been 18 months since the service I feel it is necessary to write this review as it's important for consumers to really understand the level of service and support you get from a company. To start with, during the initial consultation (they did come to my home) it was agreed to put hard wood floors in, soundproofing underlayment and new baseboards, for 2 separate floors. A price was negotiated and a payment agreed upon, to which 50% is paid up front for materials, (this is is non-refundable). The day the installer arrived he immediately complained about not being able to install the sound proofing (for some reason which made no sense to me or to the person who came to my home for the consulation ). So, now I can't have soundproofing and feel that I can't decline the service because they already have my money. My first issue is why have an inhome consult and sell a service that you can't support? In addition to this, the installer was 'put off' by having to install the larger base boards and stated that he didn't have enough "nosing" to complete all the stairs and landings (which I paid for). So 2 more components of service were not followed through. During the installation, the installer broke one of my light fixtures ... which I cleaned up and no offer from the company to compensate me for it. The installer was running behind and started to rush through the work and cut the carpet away from the stairs leaving an unsightly transition from the stairs to the floors. I had to ask him if he could fix it to make it look even somewhat professional. After all of this, I ended up paying for the job, begrudgingly. 6 months after the installation I notice all of my floors start squeaking. When I stop in to see the folks at downtown flooring and raise the issue with them, the only response I get is ... there is nothing we can do. When I ask if the soundproofing could have prevented the issue, I get the classic, "shrugging of the sholders" - translation - too bad.
1 year later the squeaking problem continues to get worse and I finally find a company, "squeaky floors" to come in and see if they can solve the problem. It turns out they can (at the tune of $1000) and the reason for the issue ... the installer was lazy during the installation process and did not stagger the staples between the joists. This coupled with a slightly uneven floor causes the floor to squeak. If the installer wasn't negligent with the staples and if I actually got what I paid for (the soundproofing) I wouldn't be having this problem. In the end, Downtown Flooring failed to fulfill their obligation to me. I only wish I had written this review sooner so that other customers would not have to go through what I have. I am extremely disappointed in this company.

Company Response

Further to the above issue and inspection by the senoir wood installer and the owner of Downtown Flooring Co. Ltd - Steven Knab the following was determined. The existing floor has developed a large roll
in the sub floor. This is caused as the joists settle under neath the subfloor and in the case have risen up creating a roll in the floor. As the joists move it causing the ply wood sub floor to move and hence
the final surface ( hardwood we insttalled ) is now also moving. Resulting in a "squaeking floor". This also explains why the noise got worse over time. This type of sub floor issues are not the responsibility of the flooring installer and in fact we could never know this was going to happen 12-18 months later. all these types of issues are explained in our " Terms and Conditions" Now not to leave the client un happy and trying to help resolve the issue proberly we have agreed to remove the new floor and expose the sub floor issues. We will also try to repair the sub floor but the client under stands and agrees that we are not in the framing / structural business so they may need to call in a general contractor if required? Also as a gesture of good faith Downtown Flooring Co. Ltd. is supplying the replacement hardwood at no charge and the client is paying for the labor to try to do the repairs to the sub starte. We are attempting the repair towards the end of May 2013.

kitchen floor

I had my kitchen floor replaced entirely with Marmoleum. I found the service to be very good from the store and the salesman Gurpd.
The installers were a bit of a challenge but in the end they came through. My floor looks great and it was the right choice for my needs.

Engineer Hardwood Floor

I checked around several hardwood floor stores in Toronto and I decided to go with Downtown Flooring, because of their pressure free sales and they have one of the best rates for installation fee per sqft. They installed engineer hardwood floor in my condo this week and they did excellent work and finished earlier then expected. Jack was very helpful, friendly and great customer service. I would definitely recommend their service.

Marmoleum Installation

I have hesitated to write this review pending the outcome of my flooring situation. Let me start by staying that if I were able to give a rating less than "0" to Downtown Flooring, I would. Last summer I did a lot of work on my tiny 1951 bungalow and the work I was most excited about was the installation of marmoleum in the kitchen, hallway and bathroom. The entire job was a disaster from start to finish. The first crew arrived and were dismayed about working in such a tiny old house. My little house has lots of plaster and uneven bits, but I think that's part of the charm. Apparently the Downtown Flooring people were horrified to be working in such a little house in my up and coming neighborhood. After insulting my home they deigned to do some of the demolition of the existing floor, and then the crew damaged the old subfloor by stepping through it and breaking some of the subfloor boards. A different crew came back to finish the work two days later. According to the contract, they were supposed to replace the old subfloor and install the marmoleum. But they decided not to replace the subfloor and instead to repair the holes in the subfloor made by the previous crew by screwing wood pieces in from under the floor (accessed in the unfinished part of the basement). They made a mess of the installation. When I arrived home, there were black glue marks all over the floor, cuts in the marmoleum, irregular seams and dirt and dust everywhere. Although they were supposed to install quarter-round, they decided instead to leave 10 lengths of quarter-round standing up in my tub. I guess they lost interest in my little house.

While they were doing the work, they decided to take a coffee break and wandered up the street to the local coffee shop. They left my home unlocked and the dog sitter came by while they were out. She locked them out and when they sauntered back to my house they were angry about not being able to get back into the house. Luckily she was still in the area and was able to return and let them back into the house. I guess they figured there was nothing of value in my little house.

I had work done on my house in advance of a family event being held at my home. While all of the other contractors met their commitments and did fantastic work, Downtown Flooring seemed to care very little about my event and why the work was important to me.

I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone. My advice is to keep looking. After several conversations with the owner, Steven, he provided me with a full refund. After a year of living with this hellish work, I've just had someone else in to correct the mess and make my house livable again. Stay away from Downtown Flooring.
