Leaky roof repair

The problem? My wife called 5 different roofers and only one actually bothered to both call back and provide an estimate: Avenue Road Roofing. They are known as the most expensive in the city but we figured, well, at least we'll get a good repair even if we have to overpay. In retrospect, that was a riduculous assumption.
It took 3 months of constant calling for them to actually appear at our house to repair the rood. 3 MONTHS! I can't even tell you how many people we spoke to along the way. It was nauseating. They quoted $1500 for a day and a half of work. It ended up taking around 3 hours. They claimed the rest of the time was spent in preparation for the job (ie. getting materials, driving to our house). I'm not making this stuff up, by the way. Sad, but true. Anyways, when they finished they left the old slats and some of their tools on our driveway and drove off. They never came back for the tools or to clean up. The items then froze to the driveway for about a month or so. When the spring thaw finally arrived I removed the slats and the rusty pry bar (I have small children by the way. So it was great having these sharp items in an easily accessible location) and ended up cutting my hand. Now, six months later I still have a small scar on my left hand. Thanks Avenue Road. This way I can either look up at my roof or look down at my hand and remember your exceptional service. Kudos!

Please stay away from this company if you could. I asked for a repair job and they sent in the most incompetent and unprofessional indiv. He never showed up on time, never kept his promises, never finished the job. A rel. small job was dragged on for 3 mo. Guess what, during winter time his installation cracked open. Now, I am being traumatized over and over again by the same repairman to have him come in and fix his own mess which is under warranty. It has been very clear to me that these people are not supervised/managed properly. Or, it might be that the company accepts jobs that they do not have time/qualification to perform. Job is still not fixed and I keep leaving messages.

Repairing Leaks

We are extremely disappointed with Avenue Road Roofing. They turned out to be an exceptionally unprofessional and unethical company with no customer service. Do not fall victim to the smooth talking salesperson who initially comes to give you a quote. We knowingly chose one of the most overpriced roofing companies in the hopes of getting our leaks properly diagnosed and fixed without any hassles. We originally called Avenue Road Roofing regarding two leaks in our house. One leak was adequately repaired. The second leak in our garage was not fixed by the extensive repairs recommended. After numerous calls to the company, an inspector came to our house and determined that the leak in the garage was actually coming from the window and not the roof. Repairing the leak in the garage simply required recaulking the window. Ultimately, the more than $4,500 worth of work to repair the roof over the garage was not necessary. We immediately contacted Avenue Road Roofing to try to discuss the situation and come to a fair resolution in terms of payment for the unnecessary work completed. First of all, we got the run around because nobody wanted to acknowledge or address our problem. We couldn’t even track down the right person to speak with because they are so cagey when there is an issue. The rude woman in accounting gave us the party line which was “the work as outlined in the contract was completed and you owe us full payment immediately or we will have a collection agency come after you and we will place a construction lien on your house.” We got this ridiculous response from the company even before the leak in the garage was actually fixed. They refused to listen to our attempt to resolve the problem in an amicable and fair manner. They certainly did not care that the customer was not satisfied with the job. Just to illustrate how ridiculous these people are - they called to tell me that they will be sending us a letter, but they refused to discuss the content of the letter over the phone. The letter was full of inaccurate information. The bottom line is that they again demanded full payment right away and they threatened to put a construction lien on our house and send a collection agency after us. There was a name and number provided at the end of the letter in case we wanted to discuss the matter. We left numerous messages. When someone finally returned our call three days later, they were rude and refused to discuss anything over the phone. This has been an extremely frustrating experience. We simply wanted to come to a fair compensation for the unnecessary work completed. Any reputable company would have acknowledged their mistake and appreciated the fact that the customer was trying to be reasonable about it. Do not trust Avenue Road Roofing. They are not honest and they are thieves.

Company Response

We were not surprised that the customer posted this review. The customer threatened to do so when we insisted he had to pay his bill after some effort to collect.
Initially; the customer called in and reported two leaks in their garage. Our technician attended the site and took photos of the degraded roof with obvious deficiencies including the existing membrane open at the wall area. Our technician further went through in detail the scope of work and demonstrated the deficient areas of the roof to the customer. The customer agreed to proceed and signed a contract.
The work was completed well. The customer complained of an additional leak after the work was completed. Our Supervisor attended the job and tested to determine a window was also leaking. Avenue Road Roofing repaired the window leak at no charge to the customer.
This customer has omitted facts in this circumstance.
1) “One leak was adequately repaired”-The garage flat roof was removed and replaced.
2) “The second leak was in our garage was not fixed by the extensive repairs recommended.” – The supplementary leak that resulted from a window was repaired at no charge and was not even part of the original agreement.
3) “The $4,500 dollar worth of work to repair the roof over the garage was not necessary” – Our technician demonstrated the damaged roof areas, took photos to document the fact and reviewed the project with the customer. The work was necessary and the customer is not accurate in his comments.
4) “We couldn’t even track down the right person because they are so cagey” – The fact is, this customer received attention and communication from 1) the technician, 2) the repair dept. supervisor, 3) a project supervisor, 4) the deputy director of the company on several occasions.
When it was time to pay; the customer wanted to negotiate a discount which we did not agree to.
The customer’s position is that the window was the singular source of their problems. Before signing any agreement, the customer was shown the roof’s condition and all work was clearly explained. Evidence of roof leaks was visible, photographed and demonstrated.
The customer’s negative comments are false and slanderous. The fact is that the customer became angry when we would not capitulate to his demand to reduce the cost of the job substantially.
We absolutely refute this customer’s version of events and take offence at his assertion that we are “thieves”. Fortunately: difficult collection customers are a miniscule percentage of the thousands of customers we service annually.
The fact of the matter is this: The customer knew well before the work began what he contracted for and why. The work was completed well and Avenue Road Roofing did additional work for free to insure the customer would be satisfied. The customer only was upset after he learned he could not take advantage of us when it was time to pay.

Flat Roof

Well this was a good job but, based on the price, it should have been an exceptional one. My neighbors did complain about the mess during the work and to their credit Avenue Road did fix up the damage to their house. I thought that after sales service was very mediocre as well.

Complicated Eavestrough job

Avenue Road Roofing, despite being somewhat more expensive than their competitors, are definitely highly recommended. They did the job when they said they would, and we were very happy with the work they did.
