Before my wife and I hired someone to refinish our basement, we went through the same process you’re going through right now. We researched 10-15 contractors and then invited 6 or 7 of them to come to our home to assess the job and submit a quote. Almost all of them did the same thing: they looked at the basement, took some measurements, asked for our input, offered some advice and then submitted either a written or verbal quote. Only finishedbasement.ca came prepared with a written template that detailed the cost of every aspect of the renovation, from demolition to adding more pot lights. Their quote was neither the lowest we received nor was it the highest but it was the most detailed and when we made the decision to go ahead with the work, every part was reviewed and every cost was explained.
We really can’t add anything different to the kind of comments you will find about this company on this website. Flooring and fixtures supplied were of high quality; work crews exhibited an excellent, almost machine-like work ethic; every single piece of garbage was removed inside and outside the home; workmanship was outstanding; advice regarding design, layout, colour schemes, flooring and fixtures was very useful and appreciated; questions were answered and problems were dealt with quickly and efficiently while the work was being done; and communication was ongoing throughout the project.
Three things really stood out for us:
First, we had several minor, unexpected issues during the renovation regarding plumbing, wiring and structural support that definitely increased the cost of the project and yet the final cost was still within 5% of the original quote.
Second, we were told that our project would be completed in 2 weeks. The project was completed in 2 weeks.
Third, at the end of the project, we were presented with a written and verbal description and explanation of every item on the final invoice and we were given the opportunity to ask questions. It took about an hour but every question was answered before we made our last payment.
After our experience with finishedbasement.ca, we can only think of one major negative issue: they only do basements. But when it’s time to refinish our main floor, our first call will be to them to see if they have expanded their operation.
This company made no empty promises. They did exactly what they said they were going to do from the time the demolition began to the time they flushed the toilet in the bathroom to ensure it worked properly. And they did it on time and on budget.
Even if you have already decided on a contractor, my advice is to talk to finishedbasement.ca and listen to some of their ideas. If nothing else, you will know what it’s like to be treated with respect by a professional and knowledgeable contractor.
