Dining Room Set

I had TMC refinish my dining room set and it came back looking like new again. I really love my dining room set and I’m so excited that TMC was able to restore it, I hadn’t realized that over the years the wood stain had discolored so much. Even though the price was a little high but with their discount it was definitely worth it instead of buying new at IKEA!

Tea Cart

My Tea Cart was passed down to me from my grandmother and its been beautifully restored. It took me a while to find the right company to do the work but once I met with the sales estimator I knew that they were right for the job.He was very knowledgeable and helpful, the price was a little bit more then expected but well worth it. Thank you TMC, I would highly recommend you!

Refinishing of antique bedroom set

I contacted TMC restoration after seeing one of their mall displays in 2010. I had already had a quote to refinish 4 pieces of furniture, coming in at less than $3,000. I thought this to be too low, and because I didn't know the company, I decided to go with TMC. The salesperson was very nice, and showed up on time. He did tell me that the cost would be alot more the $3,000 I had previously been quoted, and he was right. He quoted close to $15,000, and I said no way...he went down to about $11,375 and asked for a 50% deposit upon pickup (which I found odd). I wanted to do this for a while though, so I went through with it and he also offered to fix up another piece for free. So they took my furniture away the same day with my certified cheque in hand.

A few weeks later, I got a call from Tino who said my furniture was beautiful, but needed some extra TLC - and it would cost about $1,500 - I said no. He came down to about $450 and said it was at cost...and to be honest he made me feel extremely guilty about this. I said ok and didn't hear out of them for another month or so.

I then heard out of another man, whose name I don't remember. He said my furniture was ready, but I needed to buy "protection" for it. I honestly remembered the salesperson telling me it would be protected at no cost, and I mentioned this. The man on the phone got upset and told me this salesman had made this mistake before and would hear about it - it was not in the contract. The protection would cost upwards of $5,000 to $6,000 extra. I said no way. He then came down to about $1,100 for a spray of some kind which would still be a protection but not the best. I said ok, and the phone call ended. Not 10 minutes later I called him back to say no, and he got very upset, saying the furniture had been done alread - now how could that have been? Anyway, I just wanted my furniture back, and I wasn't impressed with either person I had dealt with, so I said fine - I would pay the increase. In the matter of 6 weeks, they had upped the price by more than 10% - or about $1,500 on $11,000.

I finally was ready to take delivery of the furniture about a month later (my delay, not theirs - I was away) and it did look very good. Their delivery men were courteous and put the furniture when I wanted it. Of course they would not offload it until I gave them a certified cheque for the balance, which to be honest I did not like to do. But in the end I have beautiful furniture. I just think they need to work on their customer service skills to make people feel better about them as a company and not to try and get more money out of people for their beloved pieces of furniture - it's like preying on sick people really. You get nervous and just want it to be over....I have to admit I was glad when my furniture was back in my house and I don't think I would ever deal with TMC again. They did not give me a warm, fuzzy feeling.

Bedroom Suite

We are pleased with the final work done on our entire bedroom suite. We were very disappointed with the original job that was done, which was far below our expectations. Namely the color. However, we commend you for the steps taken to correct the job at no extra cost. The office staff was very professional in dealing with us. I highly recommend TMC.
Thanks again.

Love seat to be refurbished

This occurred in January 2011.

price quoted was about 4,500 . About a week into the transaction, someone called to say that additional things were necessary, for example, material protection fee was necessary. I was moving at the time and explained that I could not entertain additional costs but I was intimated and made to feel that in order to get my love seat, I had to pay the extra money. I called the office to complain but was told that I had no choice but the pay the money.
I lodged a complain with the BBB.

Refinished chest of drawers

I just got my piece back that TMC picked up very promptly after my free estimate in November of 2010! I was given a quote that was then reduced to about half the amount if they could take the piece away immediately. I'm aware that I got an exceptional deal but I also got a phone call about a month later saying there needed to be additional work done that would cost another $645.
After 8 months and no word about the furniture since April, I wrote a letter of complaint to the GM with no response. After leaving a voice message of complaint I received a call letting me know the piece was completed. I expressed my concerns again to Kelly the deliveries manager, about the unreasonable length of time I had to wait for my furniture to be returned to me and she took my complaint seriously and forwarded it along to Linda the Sales Rep. Linda forwarded my concerns on to Jessie who was very understanding of my unhappiness at the situation and upon my request, very generously removed the additional costs added to the original estimate.
To give credit where credit is due, the piece looks great and the refinisher did an amazing job. The quality and attention to detail is defintitely reflected in the finished product.

Run Away

This was the worst consumer experience of my life. If you decide to deal with this company you should expect the following.
The salesman will tell you how beautiful and valuable all your furniture is. Then he will then quote you a price 4 to 5 times greater than the job should really cost. However, you will likely negotiate a "better" deal. Then as you sign the contract he wil add these extra stickers that will give the company the ability to charge you all kinds of extras down the road. Your furniture will then be picked up within hours of signing the contract and prior to leaving the you will be asked to deface your on furniture by writing your name on it with permenant marker (so it can be identified). You will then wait for a response from the company that won't come until after the mandatory 10 day coolling off period has expired. Following which you will get a call telling you how beautiful your furniture is but also informing you that some integral part of the furniture needs to be repaired for an additional cost. At this point you will likely begin to get the feeling that your family heirlooms are being held ransom and you will do anything to get them back in one piece. But don't fear you will still receive further calls to tell you that additional cost are required for finishing or protectant treatments etc.
Finally by the time you have your furniture delivered for $200-$300 you will be so anxious to get it off their trucks that you will overlook the loose parts and other issues. But don't worry if you don't want topay in full they will be happy enough to take it back to their shop and charge you storage costs.
You may also want to Google "The Master Craftsman" as that was at least one of the names that they previously ripped people off under. DON"T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID.

Refurbishing Kitchen Cupboards

The sales representative (Al Barnes) of TMC provided us with a quote for re-furbishing our kitchen cupboards. Initially, arrangements were made for TMC to pick up the doors and drawers on the same day. Al assured us that since we were not changing the colour of our cabinets; that the frames of the cupboards, kick-plates and pantry door could be done at our house by TMC. Al also explained that the procedure for re-furbishing the doors and drawers would be:
1) dipping doors and drawers in a solution tank to remove the old finish;
2) hydration of the wood (???); and
3) exact colour match as determined by their lab.
As far as we could determine none of the three embellishments occurred. The cupboard drawers and doors were sanded, stained, varnished and/or lacquered.
When we called to see if the work to be done at our house could be moved up to facilitate our granite-top supplier the situation suddenly got worse. We were now told that TMC does not do any refurbishing work in people’s homes. After some discussion, it was decided that TMC would come and take out the frames and have them refurbished in their shop. The two people they sent had no idea on how to take out the frames. They acknowledged that they basically just picked up and made deliveries. They spent approximately one hour spinning screws, removing the microwave and left with just the pantry door. As a result we took down the frames and made arrangements to have everything put in the garage for the next pick-up.
Additionally, we were told that we would receive a quote for extending the one cabinet by 3” within the next few days. Al’s guesstimate was that it would cost approximately $200-$300. Obviously, this was a huge mistake on our part by not getting a complete quote initially. When Tino of TMC called us to discuss the cost of this project, he informed us that he is from the “old school” and that the work has to be done properly. At this point Tino advises us that the job will cost an additional $1,780.00. He now has the cupboards, we have paid 50% ($2410.00) of the cost we originally agreed to ($4,820.00) and we are getting the impression that the cupboards are being held ransom. After much discussion we settled on an additional $1,500.00.
When the work at TMC was completed and ready for delivery we were instructed by Natasha that we must provide a certified cheque before anything can come off the truck. We found this to be unusual and somewhat bizarre, however, we proceeded to get a certified cheque.
The cabinet which was extended by 3” was a patch-work effort and did not match the colour of the other cabinets and thereby rejected. This was not what we expected from Tino and his “old school” approach to doing a job properly. They finally added a complete sheet of veneer along both sides of the cabinet to finish it off. The remaining cupboards were very dirty inside from the sanding dust thus leaving one to wonder about TMC’s professionalism or “old school” approach.
We must compliment Natasha Audet, the service representative, who was extremely skillful at putting a positive spin on TMC’s short-comings that would put most politicians to shame.
Over the years we have been involved in several renovating projects but we have never encountered such questionable practices as this. This exercise has certainly brought home the concept of “BUYER BEWARE”

Company Response

From Natasha Audet:

In my opinion, the recent Homestars complaint put forth by Mr. & Mrs. Roseheart is most certainly unjustified. I will say that though there may have been minor bumps along the road to a more than satisfactory finish, the expectation put on TMC Restoration, was perhaps, exceedingly high. Not only did TMC provide the Roseheart’s with above standard work It was completed in a quarter of the usual allotted time frame for thousands less than our regular retail pricing even after we negotiated a price on additional services that were not included in the contract and we were asked by the client to provide a quote for.

This job was personally overseen by myself (including over 20 hrs of my personal time) and I feel that I should take the time to address some of the concerns put forth.

Specifically within the complaint the Rosehearts specify “Al also explained that the procedure for re-furbishing the doors and drawers would be: 1) dipping doors and drawers in a solution tank to remove the old finish; 2) hydration of the wood (???); and 3) exact colour match as determined by their lab. As far as we could determine none of the three embellishments occurred.” I will start by saying that no we did not dip the doors and drawers in a solution tank for stripping purposes instead we exceeded expectations and hand stripped the aforementioned pieces to ensure that there was no inadvertent damage to the pieces. We also take the time to repair any minor damage as part of our regular work and our professional finishers have been custom mixing stains for color matches for years.

Their concerns about our drivers trying to uninstall their frames (after they agreed to have us do a full strip and refinishing as opposed to the initial touch up on the contract) are reasonable. However, the determination to not remove them themselves was also in the best interest of the client. We were misinformed about the complexity of the removal and counteracted this on delivery by having their pieces reinstalled by our two head cabinet makers as well as myself. This alone took an entire day and one second trip by a cabinet maker to do a minor installation of 2 pieces that we noticed needed correction and we corrected without hesitation.

In the end it boils down to customer expectation as opposed to what is possible when you are working with 20+ yr old particle core cabinets. We offer a contracted service for a contracted price unlike many other businesses we will actually take the time to go through all pieces thoroughly when they arrive at our shop and inform the client for their benefit and ours as to what is possible, we clarify expectation as paperwork can sometimes be misleading (it is just the nature of the beast,) we offer any solutions to any issues we may foresee occurring that our outside of the realm of the scope of contracted work for a price. It is up to the client if they would like to agree to have this work completed. We also offer them the option to say no do what is written we will accept that.

In hindsight, TMC’s mistake was taking on an overly ambitious project with unrealistic client expectations. Unfortunately, in this situation we failed to identify that until mid way through the process. We've learned to become more selective with the jobs we select and now only begin work where we are fully confident we can match or exceed the clients expectation.

LazyBoy

My dad has parked himself on his LazyBoy recliner in front of the TV for as long as I can remember. This chair was once the adored by all but now its rejected by everyone expect my dad. The leather was cracking and the foam felt like it was nearly gone. We accepted delivery of our new LazyBoy and we couldn’t be happier, the LazyBoy has become the highlight of the room again. The fabric matches the decor in the living room and it’s so comfortable, it even smells new! Joe was right it’s like exchanging the old and getting a new piece of furniture back. Thank you TMC for a wonderful job and to Joe for being so patient as my parents bickered over fabric.
