House restoration after fire

ServiceMaster took 4 years to restore my house after the interior was gutted by a fire. Inept project management, borderline incompetent service professionals & lengthy communication delays were to blame for 90% of this excessive timeframe. I strongly recommend not using ServiceMaster of Markham for any work you are planning.

Approximate cost of services:
$230,000.00

Company Response

We are so sorry to hear about your negative experience with our company. Over the past 25 years servicing the GTA we have built a solid reputation based on integrity and quality workmanship. We regret that we missed the mark in this case.

The frustration that you feel over the restoration of your rental property is understandable. There were a number of factors at play that culminated in a very long process which is quite unusual. With a very large loss in an older home like yours, the insurance process can be a long one. Waiting on things like engineers reports, an appraisal process at the insurance level, multiple bids & tenants involved, it was a full 9 months before we even received a signed go-ahead to commence repairs. Other issues beyond anyone’s control complicated things; the age of your building resulting in numerous building code issues which had to be sorted with your insurer and most notable, a serious basement leak issue that held up construction for a very long period of time. The house next door to yours was also involved & was completely rebuilt including municipal sewer lines. Unbeknownst to anyone, the city failed to reconnect your municipal sewer line which is located on your neighbours property. All expenses associated with getting to the bottom of this issue were given to you at our cost. We did not charge you anything for our time to administer this as none of it was covered under your insurance policy. It was finally resolved in the spring of 2013. As water was continuing to enter your basement up to this point in time, repairs had been stopped. There were delays throughout the process in 2013, many of which were our fault. For this, we apologize. While it is not meant to be an excuse for the delays that did occur in 2013, the historical flooding that hit Toronto in July 2013, did impact our resources in a way that we couldn’t have predicted. We sincerely regret the delays that occurred and the frustration that you experienced.
