Upholstery of couch and loveseat

These people ripped us off. We had a custom made couch and loveseat and they were to recover and they kept calling me at work asking for more money to do certain things, insert springs, etc. In the end they took out the springs from the seat and put them in the back and charged us for doing this. Also they took the nice legs from the furniture and put on crappy screws in legs which were all different heights so when we sat on the couch it went up at one end.

Stay clear of these people!

Gluing and upholstry of dining room chairs

First of all, I am embarassed that I was taken by this company, I should have known better. All I can say is, TMC, please have the president of your company call me as I no longer want the chairs back. You have made the whole experience a nightmare. My name is John Collins, TMC please call.

For those of you who had a great experience, congratulations, for those who have been scammed, I feel your pain.

Company Response

To Mr. Collins: I find your post very troubling. Please, contact me explaining why your experience was so unenjoyable. I can be reached at 905.794.2074 x 250.
With that said, I’m left a little confused by your post because you have not yet received your furniture. According to our records we were scheduled to deliver your furniture twice. On the first occasion we mutually agreed to reschedule and on the second we arrived at your home but were unable to deliver because you failed to provide payment of the balance. I took a peek at your chairs -- they look great! -- we'd love to have them delivered to you and Mrs. Collins.

Reupholstering furniture

From the high pressure, 3 hour in-home sales call (she would not leave even after midnight), to the plant supervisor making excuses for his staff consuming alcohol on the job site, this company is one of the worst we have ever dealt with. We tell everyone we know, and even those we don't know, to stay far away from this company. They left us with a very sour taste and didn't even give us any indication that they cared about what we thought or how we felt about our experience.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Drop the high pressure sales pitch. STOP DRINKING ON THE JOB!!!

chairs, table, foot stool, hope chest

I really wish I had taken the time to research this company (ie. read these reviews) prior to my agreement with TMC... or as some reviewers aptly call TMScammers. In short, waited a YEAR to receive furniture!!!! And still waiting for a piece to be finished properly. Delivery men are not careful, several pieces apparently damaged in delivery. Parts missing from original state. The list goes on ... please stay far away from this "company". I must say it really irks me to read Jesse's responses. How does that person sleep at night? To all of those positive reviewers ... you lucked out ... or perhaps you know someone that works for the "company"?

Rude women on the phone in the customer service, a rude manager and shoddy workmanship. Stay away. Far away from this reupholstery and refinishing company. Very expensive for average quality work. Better off buying from a furniture wholesale or warehouse.

refinish dining table, games table, bookcase

Our salesman was very nice and made us feel quite confident in the ability of the company to satisfy us. However, right from the start there were problems. When we were about to sign, after lengthy discussion, he added a codicil sticker to the contract, which should, in hindsight, have caused us to reject it.
Before the work began, someone called to try to convince us that we should spend another several thousand dollars for work which had already understood was to be done.
The work took a very long time, and when the pieces were returned, they were done in an amateurish way with the sort of finish we would expect to achieve in a DIY project, hardware was missing, the base of the bookcase had not been returned and the top of the bookcase had a mark.
They took things back and again called to try to get more money for the job. We again waited many weeks, and finally got our pieces back.
The dining table looks not too bad, though they didn't get the finish everywhere and despite the "super-protective coating", for which we paid extra, it became marked within two weeks. (Note that we have a dining table we've used for 26 years and its finish is still lovely. We are very careful with our furniture.)
When we contacted the company about how to repair the mark, we were told that it couldn't be done. No one seemed able to give us any specific information on the type of finish and there was little interest in finding any solution.
The gaming table, a century piece with lovely styling, came back the final time with the custom brass fittings missing and we had to call and wait several weeks to get them back. (The first time it came back with loose veneer and white metal screws in the brass fittings, as if it had been fixed by a local handyman.)
The bookcase ... well ... we'll redo it ourselves. The top is so badly done that the finish had chipped off (and there's nothing sitting on it). Simple changes in humidity have caused the amateurish work to crumble.
When we signed for this work - based on meeting these folks at the Home Show in Toronto, we were assured that the work was done in house by seasoned professionals. In fact, they farm it out and what you get depends on who you get.
This is not a company I would recommend to anyone. Our experience with them has been both exasperating and heartbreaking.

Company Response

To Hamiltonians: It must be noted many months before lodging this complaint The Master Craftsman refinished your games table a second time – after we received final payment in full. I say a second time because it wasn’t until after we completed the table the first time that you made it known your desire to have this item match another in your home. We refinished the table again despite your failure to mention this at the time the work order was written. Your other complaints were justified and were looked after accordingly. All items were redelivered in February, 2009. Nothing was heard from you until this posting was made on May 30. We pride ourselves on our customer service and an attempt to look after your concerns would be welcomed.

Living room suite restoration

I received 4 quotes on having my three piece living room set
upholstered. No one gave me the same sense of confidence and
professionalism as Brian from The Master Craftsmen. I decided on The Master Craftsmen after receiving a quote from a condescending and snarky salesperson that represents a highly rated company on this website. The Master Craftsmen ended up being a fine choice. They started the work quickly and the quality was excellent. I would recommend this company to anyone who values a thorough and proper job.

Thanks!

Carmel and I are pleased with the excellent workmanship on the two chairs. We could not have expected a whole lot more knowing the condition of the chairs.

chair refinish and leather upholstery, table refinish

A chair to be refinished came back with visible cracks at joints, sharp projects on underside, scratches in finish. Table came back with a fair job done. All this took 6 months, not the 2 or 3 promised. Several attempts to raise price including needing veneer from Germany, we bit, and special finishes above normal, refused.

Slippery folks told us the items were in "quality control" for months. The run-around was disgusting and the price sky high. Avoid these folks. Wish I had read these reviews first.

furniture refinishing

I consider The Master Craftsman to be a totally disreputable company that I would not recommend to anyone. From the salesperson, the customer service personal, the manager and owner I received total disrespect and dishonesty.

After signing a contract and having my table picked up by them last August(08) I had to pick up the table personally some 8 months later when The Master Craftsman totally ruined the original appearance and refused to refinish it again as stated in the contract. They promised 100% satisfaction!

The second company where I took the table completed the work in one week with immaculate perfection. This incredible experience with The Master Craftsman cost us headaches, much stress, loss of sleep and time(8mo) and hundreds of dollars in loss.

I would strongly suggest that you save yourself the agony of doing business with The Master Craftsman.

Company Response

To Paul: After investigating this situation in great length with our production team I am unsure what The Master Craftsman could have done differently. Originally, The Master Craftsman refinished your table and leafs to match your chairs. You felt the colour did not match. Although, this was debatable we offered to refinish the table and leafs again – no questions asked – in an effort to please a valued customer. Before proceeding we decided to create a sample of the stain and shine you envisioned for your table. The sample was created, you and your wife viewed it and approved it. All other items were completed to match the sample. Upon second delivery, a new issue was raised. You did not “like” the naturally occurring highlights, although, these are inherent to your table and were part of the sample. This confounded the production team and the owner. We offered to refinish your items a THIRD time, at cost. You refused, somehow believing we were at fault for refinishing your items to match a sample you approved and admitted did match the sample you designed. It is no surprise the second refinisher had little trouble pleasing you. It was inevitable after the amount of counselling and trouble shooting The Master Craftsman did for you and your wife. We understand that regardless of how far we go to please all of our valued customers, a minority of such cannot be satisfied despite numerous attempts to do so. Thank you
