Install bathtub

I'm general contracting and doing some of the work on a bathroom renovation in my home. I did the plumbing but ran into problems installing the tub. The acylic tub needed to be re-stalled. Hillcreasr came out and helped install the tub and changed some of my plumbing to bring it to code and make installing fixtures after tiling easier. I thought it was great value.

basement backwater sump valve

November 2009 ,our basement was flooded due to a sewer backup. We called Hillcrest. They sent 2 men out to clear the blockage in the sewer system. They informed us that we would require a new back up valve and a high water alarm. Three or four days later a new plumber came fromm Hillcrest to install the new valve and alarm Mark, the plumber wasn't on the job 20 minutes before he said he had to leave to get some parts. He returned in about half an hour or so, left again after working a few minutes, came back again several times on the excuse he needed another tool or part.
He appeared to us that he did not know what he was doing or how to fix the situation. He kept in touch with the office by phone several times asking them what he should do.
My wife was so concerned she phoned Hillcrest and asked to speak to the manager. She asked if he was a regular plumber or an apprentice.
The manager said he'd been on the job for a few years. We were not happy with this situation to say the least.

new toilet installation

In August 2009 we had Hillcrest plumbing sell and install for us a new toilet. The estimate was the same as the finished price. Andrew, the plumber was very quick and courtious, completed the job with no mess. He cleand up after him and took away the old toilet. We felt pleasd with the service.

Hot water tank repair

This is about 3 years ago and was a nightmare, i was quoted 400 and then later called that it would be 500 and then was presented with a 2300 dollar bill. On request the Hillcrest rep came by to explain the bill and was unreasonable, read here why: He said they started at 8, but they did not show up until 9:30 and they were 10 minutes walk from me at that time. Then explained they always charge 30 min driving where ever you are and had to load the van. They had a second guy come who they said started before 10 but the contractor on site saw him arrive at 11:30. They said they left at 5, but the contractor saw them leave at 3. I was threatened to have an city inspector come who would then disqualify all my gas pipes and that I would then have even greater cost. I paid and talked to many people about them in the past 3 years and heard not 1 person who had any positive experience with them, but did talk to at least 4 other people who personally had negative experience with them, 2 of them being similar to mine in level of not being professional. We then always wonder how they can stay in business by doing the work the way they do.

What could this company do to improve their services?
Have a proper complaint procedure that is available to people. Keep to the quote or inform the client correctly about any other cost. In conversation: be client friendly, do not threaten and admit to the real time you worked when there is proof and/or witnesses of what happened.
Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Never consider this company then only in emergencies when no other options are available to you. Recently after my project I saw them advertise on the back of their bus that they install a water tank for 899 all in, that is not at all realistic and that is what you can expect, information that is not realistic at all.

sump pump repair

hillcrest replaced the switch on our sump pump. the job was done quick but then i was billed for a flat rate one hour. it only took him ten minutes to do the job. i asked him if he could look at other issues, but he was only willing to do the work that he was called out for. he said that he would charge me to look at anything else. i felt ripped off by the labour charge. if i knew that the job was that easy, after inquiring, i would have done myself and felt that they were reluctant to tell me how to save and do it myself.

Simple Ductwork Extension to a room

Received a call from Hillcrest the day of ductwork installation that the "new" guy didn't order parts ahead of time. I was told that no ducting is available anywhere and none kept in stock. Hard to believe that no ducting is available in the GVRD area.

Toilet repair

Had a toilet problem. Leaking into basement. Called Hillcrest, next day Marc arrived. Fixed problem right away. Excellent service and reasonable price. Follow-up prior to coming to residence re: time and date. Phoned other plumbing companies but cost was much higher and very vague replies about dates and time.
